Café de Mujeres is a cooperative comprised of 100% women working under the CODECH umbrella in the department of Huehuetenango. Not only is the coffee Fair Trade Organic, but the farms are all owned and/or managed by women.
As CODECH convened with the female producers to determine where the funds would be better spent, they determined that 50% will go directly to the women and 50% will go towards a Women’s Health workshop. The municipality has a high infant mortality index hence they decided to have the program focus on this.
Various reports indicate that improving women's situation can benefit society in ways that transcend the direct benefits to individual women. Women's independent earnings improve the well-being of their families and communities, reduce poverty and stimulate economic growth. Higher income for women and better access to and control over their resources lead to better health and nutrition for children. [Source]
The combination of its high altitude and Bourbon varieties make the Café de Mujeres coffee an extremely high quality cup.
