The mission of From the Ground Up is, “to improve the lives of coffee growers and positively impact the communities in which they live through microfinance, building relationships, and sustainable community projects.”

What We Seek

• Development, not charity
• A hand-up versus a handout
• To facilitate achievement of coffee growers’ own ambitions
• Strength of community instead of isolation
• Projects and programs that last longer than our presence
• Transformed attitudes
• To provide encouragement and inspiration

Primary Goals

1. Raise the overall quality of life for small coffee cooperatives by committing to solving the needs of each community in a sustainable way.

2. Finance new methods for coffee growers to earn an income during the off-season through diversification

3. Provide business and financial training to entrepreneurs within coffee cooperatives to help them be successful in earning supplemental income.

4. Perform extensive evaluations of the value chain in order to improve the quality of coffee, processes, cooperative governance, access to high value markets, and training.

5. Continue to promote FTGU throughout the developed to serve as an outlet for selling coffee from partner coffee communities and raise awareness regarding the needs of coffee smallholders around the world.

The Process

After establishing relationships with rural coffee growers, From the Ground Up works to understand their goals both as a community and as individuals. Depending on the goal, whether financial or personal, we educate, connect, train, and facilitate steps to meet these goals. It is important for the growers to feel that they have opportunities to grow. Another aspect of the organization extensively evaluates the value chain to help the growers earn more for the work they already do.

Finally, FTGU purchases coffee from our partner cooperatives and sells it at retail value in order to send all the profits directly back to those growers.
