Coffee growers in Central America harvest from approximately January to March with preparation and processing lasting from approximately November through April, depending on the region. During the off-season, there are often times no income-generating activities taking place.
We have seen some growers starting to collaborate and form cooperatives, use more sustainable farming techniques, diversify their produce, and even start sending their children to schools. These are the minority. Wonderful things have been done, but unfortunately they represent a small percentage of the total coffee growers.
By providing support to marginal producers who wish to guide their efforts to other crops or activities and diversify their product and therefore diminish inherent risk of single crop farming, FTGU could sustainably contribute to improving their income source.
